We attended the recent consumer electronics show, and noted with great interest various new camcorder models. With a number of new features, these new models vary in price range and offer new technological enhancements of interest to anyone considering a camcorder purchase. Our staff examined these new models and compiled a list of five factors to consider before you buy. Tip One: Do I Really Need That? Sony and Panasonic have rolled out new models featuring face detection technology, which may or may not be worth the added investment for you. Ask yourself if you've been happy with facial images with your current model. If the answer is no, you'll be pleased to hear that face detection technology will automaticaly resolve any blurring or over exposure problems. Tip Two: Are You A Steady Hand? A camcorder will always offer image stabilization technology. This technology overcomes a less than steady hand while shooting video, and is either electronic or optical. Optical image stabilization usually provides better results. Make sure you really need it by asking yourself if you're happy with electronic image stabilization commonly found in moderately priced camcorders. Also, be aware that optical image technology is slowly but surely becoming more affordable. Tip Three: Long Timer Or Short Timer? When you buy, you'll likely be offered the chance to purchase an upgraded battery. Here's the rule of thumb: If you normally shoot video for more than an hour at a time, the upgraded battery is probably worth the extra expense (usually $75 or so). Otherwise, the standard battery will be sufficient. Tip Four: What Screen Size Is Best? Screen size is an important feature to consider. The larger the screen, the easier it is for you to see what you're recording. Also, consider in what environment you'll be doing most of your recording. Inside in consistent light levels, or outdoors in bright sunlight? Some larger screens don't work as well in bright sunlight. If you plan to record a great deal in sunlight, make sure the viewfinder is comfortable to work with. Similarly, if you shoot a lot in low light modes, make sure you have the proper type of shutter mode so your video turns out properly. Tip Five: How's The Microphone? If sound quality and clearness is of importance to you, look for a model with a zoom microphone. Most camcorders have top mounted microphones, which causes interference from other sounds and voices, particularly that of the video operator. A zoom microphone works in tandem with the zoom lens, and is an appealing feature if sound clarity is a priority. Taking these five tips into consideration will help ensure there's a good match between you and your new camcorder. Make sure to purchase a model that includes features you'll use and enjoy for years to come. If you do decide to pursue the latest technology, be certain the features and upgrades solve a nagging problem you're currently experiencing, otherwise the added cost will be nothing more than added cost.
