HOW TO GET STARTED IN SALSA DANCING

By: Yomi A

Salsa refers to a fusion of informal dance styles having roots in the Caribbean (especially Cuba and Puerto Rico), Latin and North America. Salsa is danced to Salsa music. There is a strong African influence in the music and the dance. There are some basic tips and tricks we will share with you when starting off to learn this hot fiery latin dance.

Having the right shoes for salsa dancing is very important. There are many different types and styles of shoes out there on the market. For men, most importantly, would be to have shoes with leather soles. Avoid open shoes like sandals, slippers, etc. This type of footwear can be detrimental if your partner misses a step and lands on your toes with her heels. Ooch! Solid high heel dance shoes seem to be the standard for women. Find ones that provide support for your feet. Remember to break them in to avoid getting foot blisters. Not Fun!

Your best bet is to take some classes at a local dance studio - especially if you're a guy. Sorry, but most of the salsa pressure is on you. Since this is a Latin-based dance, the man is generally expected to make the moves and lead the way. And since spontaneity is such a big part of the salsa experience, you'll need to create your own footwork within the salsa parameters. You are expected to keep constant tension in your arms as you guide your partner.

Within the confines of following the guy, ladies need to be quick and creative. You must be able to closely watch his movements, feel for his cues and where he wants you to follow. You do not want to be bobbing or bouncing around. Try to keep a straight back posture, minimal tension in your arms and let the rhythm move your hips.

And for both sexes, avoid ponytails - when you're that close and you're spinning, you don't want a lethal whack from a whirling hunk of hair!

Always relax and have fun when you go out salsa dancing. Look at the experienced salsa dancers and pick up a few things that you can add to your own style. Keep practicing your salsa dance moves when you have time and watch yourself get better and better at it.

Final tip - bring a little hand towel with you for your night out. Because if you're doing salsa right, you're going end up having to wipe off a lot of sweat!
