The Siamese cat is believed to have its origin in Siam, Thailand. This is an ancient domestic breed with its ancestry traced back to an albino cat given to the king of Siam as a gift. In Thai legends, the Siamese cats were the protectors of the royal castles and temples from evil spirits. The Siamese people also believe that when a person of high rank died, the dead person's soul would linger on in the cat for a certain period. The Siamese cat first appeared in the West in the mid 1800s. There are traditional and modern Siamese cats. These cats have a long, slim body with a kinked tail along with a long neck and bright blue eyes which are almond shaped. The original cat has a round head hence it being called the apple head Siamese. However, the modern Siamese cat has a head which is elongated with larger ears and more pronounced features. The original Siamese besides having a round face is also more muscular than a modern Siamese. The coat is of short hairs and the base coat which is cream colored. The face, ears, tail and legs are dark in color. The body is usually white or fawn with the Siamese markings. When a kitten is cream colored when first born. The Siamese markings develop gradually over the months. These markings are on the ears, tail, paws, muzzle and lower legs. It is a very demanding cat and craves attention at all times. This breed has a dog like mentality. The Siamese cat is an affectionate, energetic, intelligent, inquisitive and people centered pet. It is a very vocal and talkative breed. The Siamese cat talks constantly, and when it is on heat it can be very annoying. It is then that the cat will become very loud and roar like a wild lion. If a Siamese cat feels that it is neglected, it will become extremely jealous and throw tantrums. A Siamese cat does not think highly to being ignored, it is a breed which requires constant attention. The traditional Siamese cat however, has a more laid back temperament than that of the modern Siamese cat. The Siamese cat is bored quickly. It is essential to have toys and an area for it to play and exercise. It needs to scratch and sharpen its claws to be healthy. A cat gym or cat tree with a scratching post would be most essential. Regular brushing is necessary in order to keep its coat in good condition. The Siamese cat is a breed that matures early could be as early as 5 months old. They are also very fertile and the average litter size is about six. Ensure your pet is vaccinated if it is allowed to go outdoors. Should you give your cat fruit or greens they have to be boiled first to aid with the digestion. You can take your pet outside for a walk by using a harness and leash to stop it running away. The Siamese cat is still one of the favorite shorthaired breeds in the world today. It is not suitable for everyone because it is a cat that needs lots of love and attention to be happy. It is also not the right pet for those who do not like a noisy cat. However, because of its affectionate nature, the Siamese cat can become your devoted companion and best friend. Being a shorthaired cat, it only needs minimal maintenance. The Traditional Siamese cat does have a quieter personality than the modern Siamese and will make a better pet for the household.
