Cats are given all kinds of supernatural powers by their owners. This probably derives from the fact your kitten senses the world differently than you or I do. Ah, but how do they differ and can we consider them an enhancement? Cats are oh so cute, but there is a definite dark side to your little fur ball. This dark side also explains how its senses have evolved over time. Simply put, your kitten is a predator. Its senses are all tailored to help it catch its prey. Vision is the first and foremost sense for your predatory fur ball. Simply put, it has excellent night vision to support its ability to hunt mice, rodents and elephants at night. During the day, that same vision is a hinderance as their vision is worse than ours. Cats have long been associated with the devil because of their red satan eyes that show up in pictures. The truth, however, is the red you see is a reflection off a part of their eye that concentrates light so that they can see better at night. On the hearing front, you probably expect your kitten to have far superior hearing to you or I. On the lower end of the sound scale, they hear about the same as us. On the upper end, however, they can hear much higher sounds than either we or a dog can. As we all know, a cat has a sense of smell that is simply amazing. Crack open a can of food for your kitten and they will be at your feet immediately. Compared to a human, their sense of smell is 14 time sharper and they have double the smell sensory cells. Finding your prey is key, but sooner or later you are going to have to touch something. Much of the cats sense of touch comes through its whiskers. It has them on its face, chin, legs, and ankle areas. Whisker use depends on the breed, but all are used to sense touch and provide input to the brain. Brain activity studies show that the sensation sent by the whiskers are processed much like sight, meaning cats can be said to visualize images with their whiskers. Cats show no interest in eating plants and nobody was ever able to determine why. Well, now we think we know. It appears that cats cannot taste most sugars, so they have no attraction to plants or sweets. How's that for a sense of taste. Does your cat have enhanced sense. Clearly it does, although probably in different ways than you anticipated. Should you be worried about these senses? Not until cats take over the world!
